You hear about it all the time in the news because thats how media spins things. I belive the stats were somewhere close to 4000 crimes nationally in 1994 but with growing popularity of games especially violent ones it has decreased to under 100 this last year.
The truth is in the past decade since 1994 crime has gone down. If you're not 18 then you shouldn't be playing it. GTA subjects you to sex, drugs and violence on a massive scale. I've always said in the past that the parents are at fault and not the games but letting children play a game like GTA IV that lets you steal someones car and then drag them down the road when they try to reclaim thier vehicle and ultimately "scraping" them off by passing close to a parked Land rover leaving a stain on the Rover. I agree that most kids know right from wrong at a certain age but there is a hell of a lot that don't.
Times have changed since we were kids (god that makes me feel old) this type of entertainment wasn't available back then. What you say is true from a certain aspect but why is child crime so common in the news today? Sure when I was young kids stepped out of line and did silly stuff but very rarely if ever did you hear of kids murdering people, shooting people, beating animals to death, ASBO's. There is no stopping them so I believe that its better to learn it from parents then outside influences. I truly believe the majority of kids are smart and honestly I think that if a kid wants to play he will go to a friends house with an older brother and play anyway. Games especially violent ones are enjoyable to many people. If a child has a mental disorder then there really is no helping them. I would never knock someone else as long as their kids are more or less well behaved. Granted there is a cut off but most kids start to realize right and wrong. I think Kids of about 12 or 13 are smarter then you might think. They know they are not to go on killing spree's in real life and that stealing a car is much more difficult then the game makes it out to be. Kids will hear profanity on HBO, South park, School or just walking in the mall. Honestly after reading Grand Theft Childhood and seeing how many different times in history thing have been banned or censored is horrifying to say the least. Most kids are mature enough to understand right from wrong.
